Siding is meant to last many years, and newer technology and generations of products increase its longevity. But there are signs siding may need to be replaced. Once you rule out roof issues, higher heating and cooling bills can point to deteriorating exterior wall insulation—especially in older siding.
If you notice chipping, peeling or cracking, and/or you’ve had to repaint every few years, that’s a key indicator siding needs replacement. Also, warping is a surefire sign it’s time to replace. And if the layer beneath the siding has begun to rot (dry rot) or soften, which can be determined by sliding a screwdriver under warped panels, better not waste any time.
Another sign your siding needs replacement is the presence of bubbles. These occur just beneath the surface, meaning water has become trapped. As siding is engineered to keep moisture away, there’s a better than even chance it’s time to replace.
